HOLE 11

The Glen is the signature hole on the Course and at various times in history has ranked as one of the best in the world. In 1935, the inimitable Gene Sarazen was found wanting after he managed to put three balls out of bounds before playing a more conservative long iron onto the fairway. The great Arnold Palmer played this hole in direct contrast in 1966. In an exhibition game, Palmer drove his ball the full 370 metres to the heart of the green and from a tee at least 50 metres behind that used by Sarazen. He proceeded to two putt for a birdie and halve with Sir Bob Charles, his opponent on the tour. An accurate tee shot on this hole is required. Out of bounds and a creek guard the entire left side of the fairway and bush and trees the right side. Into a northerly wind, it requires a well struck ball to reach the wide fairway, with less difficulty from the club tees. In calm conditions a medium-short iron will be required too find the green, which slopes away from the player with out of bounds to the left and large bunkers guarding each side of the green. The green is large, long and narrow with a difference of up to three clubs required from front to rear, dependent on conditions. lt from both sides of the green. Most players prefer to feed the ball in short left and allow for the natural run on to the green.
